This introductory workshop is designed for nonprofit staff and volunteers who need to write a grant proposal but aren’t trained grant writers. Drawing on real examples and reviewer insights, the session focuses on simple, effective strategies to help participants craft clear, complete, and compelling applications—just in time for upcoming local funding opportunities like the new Together for SLO County fund.

Participants are encourged to bring an application they are currently drafting for feedback.

Join us and learn:

  • How to read and interpret funder guidelines so you meet every requirement.
  • What grant reviewers look for—and how to make your proposal stand out.
  • How to write clear, concise answers that stay on topic.
  • Tips for preparing simple, aligned budgets and attachments that build credibility.

Instructor: Michael Simkins, Ed.D.

Michael brings a blend of educator insight and nonprofit leadership to his work with Spokes. He has served in nearly every board role—secretary, treasurer, and president—and knows firsthand what it takes to keep community organizations thriving. Having read, scored, and written successful grant proposals, Michael offers a down-to-earth, practical perspective on how nonprofits can make their applications stand out.
