Spokes Ask an Expert is a series of small-group learning sessions that bring together nonprofit leaders and staff with local experts to explore timely and relevant topics. This session is dedicated to Legal Issues.

Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions in advance and engage in live discussions during the session.

The following topics could serve as a basis for generating questions:

  • Board Responsibilities and Governance
  • Fundraising and Donor Compliance
  • Employment and Volunteers
  • Maintaining Tax-Exempt Status
  • Contracts and Liability
  • Basic Guidance on Immigration Orders

Expert: Stephanie Barclay 

Stephanie Barclay is a dedicated nonprofit leader and attorney with extensive experience in legal services and organizational growth. After a successful legal career—including service as a Deputy Attorney General—she joined the San Luis Obispo Legal Assistance Foundation (SLOLAF) in 2011 and later became its first Executive Director. Under her leadership, SLOLAF grew from a single-program nonprofit to a robust legal aid organization with 12 staff and stable funding. Stephanie is known for advancing access to justice, fostering strategic partnerships, and prioritizing succession planning. Her board service includes SLOLAF, the SLO County Bar Association (Past President), and the San Luis Obispo Women Lawyers Association (Past President).
