It's easy to get excited when a willing candidate is identified for an open board position. But much like employee selection, there are important advance steps to take to increase the likelihood that the individual will meet your expectations over the long term. By tapping into the science of organizational psychology, a nonprofit boards and its organization’s staff can work together to select, onboard and retain engaged, impactful board members.

This class will cover:

  • The Pre-Work: Aligning on your board member competencies, essential functions (responsibilities), and expectations
  • Building a candidate pool of qualified and diverse board members
  • The Selection Process: Screening and interviewing board candidates (including painting a realistic picture), using a structured format, pre-briefing and debriefing, and looking for specific skills and parallel experience
  • The Post-Selection Success: Celebrating, onboarding, and checking in
  • Creating ideal conditions within your board to promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) to foster engagement and retention

Instructor: Kellie Conn, SPHR Kellie is an organizational development professional with 30 years of experience in coaching, organizational design, communication, and culture. She has served the community as a board member, volunteer, and/or consultant for The SLO Film Festival, Coastal Performing Arts Foundation, Ecologistics, Rotary Club of Los Osos, CASA, and the Nashville Chamber of Commerce. Kellie currently co-leads People and Culture Leadership Group, a coaching and culture consulting group specializing in leadership and career coaching, nonprofit culture consulting, and meaningful time away programs. She holds a Master’s Degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology and is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the HR Certification Institute.
