Exclusively for Nonprofit Board Presidents / Board Chairs

Serving as Board President or Chair of the Board is a big commitment. This roundtable is a facilitated discussion that provides a peer environment where you can work through questions and challenges that you are experiencing in your role as Board President / Chair. This is not a formal presentation or workshop, come prepared to participate. In this roundtable you’ll engage with other board presidents to share challenges, brainstorm solutions, and build connections with each other.

Only the Board President / Board Chair of Spokes member organizations can participate in this exclusive member event.

Food included so please RSVP in advance

Facilitated by: Michael Simkins, Ed.D., has been a member of several nonprofit boards and served as board secretary, treasurer, and president.  His professional experience spans the education and nonprofit sectors. Currently, he is president of the San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre board and the UCLA Alumni Central Coast Network.

 Presidents Roundtable Program Guidelines

  • --Agenda: 15 minutes of introductions/announcements, 60 minutes of spotlight discussions (four individuals will have 15 minutes to present a specific topic/need to the group and solicit feedback, suggestions and guidance.  Topics can include sharing what is keeping you up at night, asking for something you need or sharing an announcement or development about which you are excited), 15 minutes to close, remind next spotlight participants and make connections with peers to continue any conversations started in the session.

  • --Exchanging of business cards and organization materials is welcomed and encouraged!

  • --No donors will be included in this series.  However, Spokes will invite speakers to participate in discussions at the request and with approval from the group participants.  Participants will be given advanced notice of any guest speakers.

  • --What happens in the Presidents Roundtable, STAYS in the Presidents Roundtable.  Our ability to be honest and open with each other about the challenges we face depends on our ability to trust each other, offer mutual respect and use discretion.

  • --Only one representative from an organization may participate.  No other board members or other staff will be included (in keeping with our commitment to confidentiality)

  • --These sessions will only be as helpful and supportive as we are in our participation and commitment to one another.

  • --Only Spokes member organizations will be able to attend the sessions.  Restricting participation to member organizations allows us to build some continuity in our participant roster and, we hope, will allow participants to foster stronger connections with one another and feel “safe” when sharing with challenges the group.

  • --All sessions are a free member benefit
