Hosting a special event is a unique opportunity for a nonprofit organization to engage its constituents and increase support while providing critical information to advance their mission. But with countless committee (and subcommittee!) meetings to discuss table linens, guests who swore they sent in their RSVP, and an ever-decreasing budget, many begin to wonder if there is even a point to planning an event in the first place. Join us as we discuss event planning basics – from determining your event’s purpose (and therefore evaluation methods), to getting Board buy-in, to tips and tricks to keep you organized the day of your spectacular soiree… and what to do after the event! This class is intended for board members and staff alike who are looking at their 2018 calendar and gearing up for event season –whether you’re ready or not! After this class you will be able to:
-Create a detailed event overview so you know the scope of your event before you begin implementation
-Know how (and when) to engage key stakeholders to guarantee buy-in from organization leaders
-Identify methods for running a seamless event

Presented by: Piper Fedrow, Cal Poly Student Affairs Development
Piper has been working in development for seven years, currently supporting the Student Affairs Development team at Cal Poly. Her name may sound familiar, as she previously worked at Spokes as the Impact Generator, where she coordinated the Spokes Salutes events in both spring and fall of 2016. For five years she worked as the manager of donor prospecting and engagement at the Planned Parenthood affiliate in San Diego, where she was a key component of the prospecting, cultivating, and stewarding of donors. As a member of the small events team at Planned Parenthood, she planned and executed more than 30 events annually, including a $1.3 million grossing anniversary dinner, intimate dinner parties for major donors, evening educational gatherings, and cocktail parties for young professionals. She is currently a member of the Development Committee at The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County and lives in Morro Bay (where she grew up!) with her husband, daughter, and dog.
